Competence and organisational development

This research theme explores how competence development and organizational transformation shape the future of retail and logistics. It examines workplace learning for professionals in these sectors, the evolving roles of e-commerce and supply chain managers, and the impact of digitalization on employee experiences and organizational structures. Additionally, it investigates the role of innovation processes—ranging from open innovation, where multiple stakeholders engage in co-creation and idea exploration, to closed innovation, where development occurs within organizational boundaries. Understanding how organizations in retail and logistics sectors engage and manage these processes is critical for building resilience in an era of rapid change, marked by climate crises, technological disruptions, and shifting consumer expectations, while ensuring long-term competitiveness.

The research aims to identify strategies for continuous skill development, supporting businesses in adapting to new technological and market demands, and integrating innovation as a core driver of organizational change. Key questions include:

  • How can workplace learning programs be designed to enable continuous skill development among retail and logistics professionals?
  • In what ways can e-commerce and supply chain managers effectively integrate digital technologies to improve operations and organizational efficiency?
  • How do different innovation models –ranging from open to closed innovation– impact competence development and organizational transformation?

By addressing questions like these, this research theme provides insights into building a resilient and adaptable workforce while enabling organizations to navigate the challenges and opportunities of an evolving retail and logistics landscape.
